 About the Chemist-

Louis Bernard, also known as Guyton de Morveau, lived in Paris, France from 1737-1816. He was a chemist, educator, and aeronaut whose proposals for a revised chemical nomenclature helped establish the distinction between elements and compounds.

Louis practiced law at Dijon from 1756-1762, and was on an advocate-general in the provincial parlement of Burgundy from 1762-1782. In '82 he retired and devoted his life to chemistry. His ideas had a great affect on the naming of chemicals throughout Europe.

Louis also made improvements in manufacturing gun powder, and was the first to use chemicals such as chlorine and hydrochloric acid and a disinfectant.
